Transfers

A transfer records the movement of money between two of your own accounts. Unlike a transaction (which represents external income or an expense), a transfer has no effect on your overall net profit — it just moves a balance from one account to another.

When to Use Transfers

Common situations that require a transfer:

  • Moving money between accounts — e.g. sweeping excess cash from checking to savings
  • Paying a credit card bill — money leaves your checking account and reduces your credit card balance
  • Square or Stripe payout — when Square deposits money into your bank, a transfer moves the amount from the Square Clearing account to your checking account (this happens automatically when you configure a payout destination)
  • Owner draw or capital injection — recording money you put into or take out of the business

Creating a Transfer

Open an account register and click + Transfer.

FieldNotes
From AccountPre-filled with the current account
To AccountThe destination account
AmountThe amount being transferred
DateWhen the transfer occurred
DescriptionOptional note, e.g. "Monthly savings sweep"

Click Save. The amount immediately deducts from the source account's balance and adds to the destination account's balance.

Viewing Transfers

The account register shows transfers inline with transactions, identified by the transfer icon. The From side shows the amount as negative (money leaving), and the To side shows it as positive (money arriving).

You can also filter the Transactions page by account to see all entries affecting a given account, including transfers.

Editing and Deleting Transfers

Transfers can be edited or deleted from either account's register. Click the transfer row to open it. Changes apply to both sides of the transfer simultaneously.

WARNING

Deleting a transfer affects the balances of both accounts. Make sure this is intentional before confirming.

Automatic Transfers (Square/Stripe Payouts)

When you set a Payout Destination in Square Sync or Stripe Sync settings, Geekonomics creates transfers automatically when it detects a payout. You don't need to record these manually.

See Square Sync and Stripe Sync for setup instructions.
